CALGARY – A balanced offensive attack for the Calgary Dinos was more than enough on Sunday as they defeated the visiting Manitoba Bisons, 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21) in the Jack Simpson Gym.
After having trouble creating and then keeping momentum against the Bisons on Saturday afternoon, the Dinos put forth a much more consistent team approach on Sunday. With ten players seeing action throughout the match, three Dinos had over ten kills on the afternoon, while
Oleg Podporin and
Allen Meek each had seven blocks.
Specifically for the Dinos, the hulking Podporin was sensational in limited minutes, providing a spark for the Dinos in the latter two sets with eight kills and no errors. Head Coach
Rod Durrant was impressed with the play of his big middle hitter.
“In the third and fourth set, Oleg came in and did a tremendous job for us. He blocked with presence and his serve created problems for them (the Bisons). He definitely made a difference,” said Coach Durrant
Fourth year outside hitter
Andrew Tallas led Calgary with 13 kills and six digs on the afternoon.
While hanging tough with the Dinos for the majority of the weekend, the Bisons ultimately could not contest the blocking and attacking efforts of the Dinos in the third and fourth sets of Sunday's match. Manitoba received solid all-around play from John Galloway, who dialed in 16 kills to go along with ten digs. Chris Voth was also good on the attack, notching ten kills.
With the loss, the Bisons will return home to host the Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend. Manitoba drops to 1-5 on the year, and will need to right the ship quickly to get back into contention in Canada West.
The Dinos improve to 5-1 in conference action with the sweep and are now looking at a huge weekend series with their rivals to the north, the Alberta Golden Bears. Currently ranked fourth in the CIS, the only Canada West opponent above Calgary in the rankings is the Bears.
With the big games upcoming,
Rod Durrant seemed happy that his team put together a good performance this weekend.
“We had to come out and play better as a group then we have the past three matches, (against Trinity Western and Manitoba). We're pleased with how we played as a team, we played much better together.”
