Dinos shut out to end season; pair named all-stars

| By:

VICTORIA - The UVic Vikes women's field hockey team wrapped up the regular season Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over the Calgary Dinos. Now, the Vikes will wait for the rest of the tournament field to be settled for the UVic-hosted CIS/FHC Championships.

The Canada West regular season came to a close, as the Vikes improved to 6-4-2 to finish in second place. The previous day, the UBC Thunderbirds captured their sixth consecutive conference crown, with UBC, UVic, and Alberta set to represent the Canada West at the CIS/FHC Championships in two weeks time at UVic's Field Hockey Turf.

On Sunday, the Vikes wasted next to no time in lighting up the scoreboard. Just two minutes after the opening whistle, Natalie Wise gave the home side a 1-0 lead with her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The 2007 All-Canadian punched in a back-hander after a series of tic-tac passes from the penalty corner attempt.

The second score of the afternoon came at the 21st minute, on a great individual effort by Whitney Siegmann. Siegmann, who was just added to the roster earlier this week, saved the ball from going out of bounds on the end line and used a back-handed flick to put her Vikes ahead 2-0.

Vikes 'keeper Kaitlyn Williams made a handful of key saves to record the shutout.

After the match, the Canada West All-stars were announced with the Vikes landing three representatives. Midfielder Ali Lee received post-season recognition for the fourth straight year, and it was first time honours for defenders Katie Tittler and Perri Espeseth. All-star certificates were also presented to Calgary's Courtney Campbell and Laural Kuntz.
