CALGARY – Luis Rangel-Kataev and
Josral Frederick found the back of the net, while
Hany Shafie posted a clean sheet as the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team beat the Trinity Western University Spartans 2-0 on Sunday at McMahon Stadium.
The victory marked Calgary's fifth straight and capped off the team's final regular-season home game at McMahon Stadium, with the team's graduating seniors honoured before kickoff.
The Dinos wasted no time getting on the board.
William Omoreniye started the play with a corner kick just over nine minutes into the match, and
Milan Ponjevic nearly finished it himself, sending a header off the crossbar. Rangel-Kataev was in the right place at the right time, heading home the rebound to give Calgary a 1-0 lead. It proved to be the game-winner.
The rookie's goal capped a three-goal weekend after he scored twice against the UBC Okanagan Heat on Saturday, and his seven goals this season lead Canada West.
Calgary carried its one-goal advantage into halftime after controlling much of the opening 45 minutes and holding a 6-3 edge in shots. Shafie was perfect in the opening half, stopping all three Trinity Western attempts, including a Grant Verhoeven chance in the dying seconds before the break.
The Dinos added some breathing room in the 67th minute, when Frederick buried his third goal of the season to double Calgary's lead.
Efe Udolu-Joshua threaded a through ball into Frederick's path, and the forward made no mistake.
Shafie took care of the rest, turning aside one shot in the second half to finish with four saves and a clean sheet in his final regular-season home game. Calgary outshot Trinity Western 12-7 overall.

Joey Plenzik, Ponjevic and Shafie.
With the win, the Dinos remain atop the Prairie Division of Canada West with a 7-2-0 record. Trinity Western falls to 3-6-1 and sits fifth in the Pacific Division.
The Dinos will return to action Friday, Oct. 2 when they travel to face the Fraser Valley Cascades at 7:45 p.m. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.
Trinity Western will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday, Oct. 2.
