Shafie stands tall as Dinos earn draw at Fraser Valley

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – Hany Shafie made seven saves to post his second straight clean sheet as the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday night at Rotary Stadium.

The road point against a familiar foe extends Calgary's unbeaten run to six games and moves the Dinos to 7-2-1 in Canada West play. The Cascades, who improve to 5-3-3, have ended the Dinos' season in the playoffs in each of the last two years.

Fraser Valley carried much of the play in the opening half, outshooting Calgary 7-3, but Shafie was equal to every chance. He turned aside a pair of attempts from Mateo Brazinha, the Cascades' most dangerous attacker on the night, and added stops on Adam Szymanski, Julian Pearce and Brody Perkin to keep the game scoreless at the break.

The second half was a tighter, more physical affair, with each team managing only two shots and the referee showing five yellow cards over the final 25 minutes. Shafie came up big again in the 76th minute to deny Brazinha, who finished with three shots on target, and made his seventh save on an Aidan Fitzgerald effort in the 88th minute.

Calgary pushed for a winner in the closing minutes, earning a pair of late corners, and Efe Udolu-Joshua had the Dinos' best chance in the 89th minute, but De Souza made the save to preserve the draw. De Souza finished with three saves for the Cascades.

Calgary remains first in the Prairie Division after its closest rivals were either idle or dropped points on Friday. Fraser Valley sits third in a tightly contested Pacific Division, having played a conference-high 11 games.

The Dinos will return to action Saturday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. when they travel to face the UBC Thunderbirds. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.

UFV will host the Alberta Golden Bears on Sunday, Oct. 4.
