CALGARY –
Josral Frederick,
Luis Rangel-Kataev and
Efe Udolu-Joshua combined for five goals as the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team ran past the UBC Okanagan Heat 5-1 at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
The win improves the Dinos to 6-2-0 in Canada West play, while UBC Okanagan falls to 0-7-0 on the season.
Rain fell steadily through the opening half, but it did nothing to slow Calgary down. The Dinos struck three times in a 14-minute span to seize control early. Frederick opened the scoring in the 10th minute, his first goal of the season, finishing off a Rangel-Kataev feed. Rangel-Kataev returned the favour four minutes later, finding a lane through the UBC Okanagan defence to make it 2-0 off a
Nabeel Naboulsi assist.
Udolu-Joshua added a third in the 24th minute, heading in another Naboulsi assist to send the Dinos into the break 3-0 up. UBC Okanagan tried to answer late in the half with three straight corner kicks off the boot of Allan Yin, but goalkeeper
Oliver Allen and the Calgary defence turned each one away.
UBC Okanagan came out with more urgency to start the second half, controlling possession for a stretch and forcing Calgary to defend a 48th-minute chance, though nothing came of either team's push in the opening minutes.
The Heat finally got on the board in the 51st minute when a Calgary turnover sprung Mosi Klusman in alone on goal; Klusman chipped the ball over a challenging Allen to cut the deficit to two.
Calgary answered quickly. Rangel-Kataev rang a shot off the crossbar in the 54th minute, but then found the net for real four minutes later, converting a through ball from Frederick to restore the three-goal cushion at 4-1. The goal was Rangel-Kataev's second of the match and capped a hot stretch that has now seen him score five goals over his last three matches. Udolu-Joshua put the finishing touch on the scoring in the 67th minute, firing one home off a through pass from
Jacob Hunter for his second of the game and third of the season.
The Dinos finished with a wide edge on the stat sheet, outshooting UBC Okanagan 16-3 with eight shots on target to the Heat's two.
