CALGARY – Erica Mysko's second-half goal gave the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team a 1-0 win against rivals Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday at Mount Royal Stadium, keeping Calgary unbeaten through the first month of the Canada West season.
The result improves the Dinos to 7-0-0 on the year, while MRU suffered its first loss of the season to fall to 6-1-0.
Calgary controlled the game from the opening whistle, registering 15 total shots compared to MRU's 4. The Dinos couldn't find the breakthrough before halftime, however, with Sofia DiGiacomo and Ella Djuranic both sending a header and an open-play effort over the bar, and goalkeeper Ella Filek turning away a Sarah Donick chance.
The deadlock broke in the 52nd minute when Mysko's run was found in the box, tapping in a low cross from Mykena Walker for her second goal of the season. Calgary continued to create chances the rest of the way through Djuranic, Donick and Mysko herself, but the opening goal proved to be enough to secure the win.
At the other end, MRU managed only one shot on target all match, in the eighth minute, when Dany Juarez's low ball in was collected comfortably by Cheridan Johnson for the Dinos. It was the only save Johnson needed all afternoon, as the Cougars failed to test her again. Johnson finished with the clean sheet, her sides fourth consecutive shutout, while Filek made six saves in a losing effort for MRU.
The Dinos will return to action Friday, Oct. 2, when they host the Regina Cougars at McMahon stadium, with a kick-off of 6:00 p.m. Tickets are available at GoDinos.com/Tickets.
