CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos made it back-to-back wins as they beat the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 at Cohos Commons Field at SAIT on Saturday afternoon.
A brace from Luis Rangel-Kataev and an own goal from Andrew Markos improved the Dinos record to 4-2 for the season, while the Huskies dropped to 2-2.
The opening half featured constant back-and-forth possession, with both teams recording four shots on goal, but neither side were able to find the back of the net. Calgary goalkeeper Oliver Allen made some vital saves during the first 45 minutes, including denying striker Tao Hein on the stroke of half time to keep his side level.
The Dinos best chance of the half came through Nabeel Naboulsi, who was picked out in the box by a brilliant delivery from William Omoreniye on the left wing, but his header drifted narrowly wide.
The second half started much like the first, with both teams going end to end until Rangel-Kataev broke the deadlock in the 56th minute for his second goal of the season. Three minutes later, the Huskies turned the ball into their own net to make it 2-0 for the Dinos.
And the Dinos made it 3-0 in the 76th minute. After some great hold up play by Dominic Anamali, who surged down the right wing and played it to Rangel-Kataev on the edge of the box, the forward drilled an effort into the bottom corner to seal the result.
Rangel-Kataev said the team's work in training paid off after a tough stretch.
"It's an unbelievable feeling. We've been working so hard this whole week," he said. "Last week we had a few tough games. We came off a loss and then bounced back with a win. So today, after a whole week of training hard, we were able to get the win."
"I'm just so happy. It's an incredible feeling when something that you work so hard towards ends up paying off and you get rewarded."
