CALGARY – Sofia DiGiacomo scored a goal and added an assist as the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team blanked the MacEwan University Griffins 2-0 on Sunday at McMahon Stadium.
The result kept Calgary perfect to open the season, improving to 4-0-0, while MacEwan dropped to 1-3-0.
DiGiacomo opened the scoring in the 29th minute, rising to head home a brilliant delivery from
Rowyn James struck from 30 yards out for the game's first goal. Calgary doubled its lead just over three minutes later when DiGiacomo split the MacEwan defence with a spectacular through pass, and Donick won the race to it before finishing for the Dinos' second. Donick was a constant threat throughout, finishing with seven shots, five on target, and rattling the crossbar in the second half as the Dinos continued to press for a third.
Calgary controlled play from start to finish, outshooting the Griffins 21-4 and holding a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. Goalkeeper
Cheridan Johnson was rarely tested but made both saves she needed for the shutout, while MacEwan's Sabrina Alexander kept the deficit from growing with five saves of her own. The match was a chippy affair throughout, with six yellow cards issued between the two sides.
"Good to get three points today and six points on home soil," DiGiacomo said. "Every game, this group is gaining more chemistry and becoming comfortable with each other, showing the potential we have to compete in this league."
The Dinos will return to action Saturday, Sept. 19, when they travel to face the Saskatchewan Huskies at 12 p.m. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.
