Dinos tripped up in overtime by Bisons

WINNIPEG – Dana Goertzen scored the overtime winner lifting the Manitoba Bisons to a 3-2 win over the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team on Friday night at the Wayne Fleming Arena.

The win vaulted the Bisons into the Canada West playoffs, coupled with the Saskatchewan Huskies falling to the Mount Royal Cougars.

The Bisons opened the scoring just 75 seconds in. Julia Bird netted her 11th of the season after a scramble in front that Dinos goaltender Amelia Awad could not control. Awad settled in from there, stopping point shots from Hanna Bailey and turning aside chances from Goertzen and Julia Bilous. Her best save of the period came on a break by Bird, who nearly doubled the lead.

At the other end, Emily Shippam had support from her defence. Sadie Keller and Brenna Nicol each blocked shots on the Calgary power play. Shippam's top stop came midway through the first on a cross-crease pass that required a full extension to preserve the lead.

Manitoba carried play early in the second, beginning with a power play. Aimee Patrick hit the crossbar, and Nicol was denied by Awad's glove. Awad continued to frustrate the Bisons, stopping several quality looks.

Calgary's power play shifted momentum. Hannah Reagh scored her fifth of the season on a rebound in tight, and Evelyn Lawrence added her seventh on a late tip in front to give the Dinos a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third, both goaltenders were sharp. Awad stopped Norah Collins off the rush and denied the rebound chance. Claire Moorman later hit the crossbar following a Calgary deflection.

After killing off a penalty, Manitoba found life. Patrick tied the game 2-2 on the power play seven minutes into the third, finishing a pass from Collins for her 10th goal of the season.

In the extra frame, Goertzen scored the winner on a beautiful one hand tuck just around Awad's outstretched pad.

The result locks the Dinos into second place in Canada West's Prairie Division. They will host a conference quarter-final series against either the Alberta Pandas or Trinity Western Spartans.

Before that, Calgary and Manitoba will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. puck drop at the Wayne Fleming Arena.
