SASKATOON – Efe Udolu-Joshua scored twice, including the winner in the 78th minute, as the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team came from behind for a 2-1 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday at Griffiths Stadium.
The win improves the Dinos to 9-3-1 on the season, equaling the program record for most wins in a regular season, and ensures Calgary finish first in the prairie standings.
It was Saskatchewan struck who struck early, with Ethan Cabral scoring in the fifth minute to give his team the early lead. Calgary settled into the game, creating chances and levelled the match in the 21st minute when Udolu-Joshua finished off a pass from Josral Frederick.
The Dinos controlled much of the play from there, outshooting the Huskies 12-4 over the 90 minutes, with Udolu-Joshua accounting for seven of those attempts. Calgary had a chance to take the lead in the 59th minute when Greg Smith went over in the box to win his side a penalty. Udolu-Joshua stepped up for the penalty kick, but his effort went over the bar.
He soon made up for it. The Dinos continued to press for the lead, and after Frederick hit the post in the 76th minute, two minutes later Udolu-Joshua put the Dinos in front for good, again with Frederick getting an assist. Hany Shafie made two saves in goal for Calgary, while Jaron Slopinski made three for Saskatchewan.
The Dinos will return to action Saturday, Oct. 24 for their final regular season game when they play the Mount Royal University Cougars at 3 p.m on MRU Campus Field. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.
Saskatchewan will travel to face the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday, Oct. 24.
