CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team improved to 10-0-0 on the season on Friday, getting goals from Sofia DiGiacomo and Erica Mysko to beat the Mount Royal University Cougars 2-1 at McMahon Stadium.
The win leaves Calgary unbeaten at 10-0-0 in Canada West play, while Mount Royal falls to 7-2-1.
"I think they're a good opponent. It was always going to be back and forth game," said Dinos head coach Diogo Raposo.
The Dinos pressed from the opening whistle and found the breakthrough in the 36th minute. DiGiacomo scored her sixth goal of the season with a header from a Brooke Batty corner, giving Calgary a 1-0 lead it carried into the break.
"We came out with a lot of energy today, and we just got the job done," DiGiacomo said. "It was a battle, as it always is against this team."
Calgary doubled the advantage early in the second half. Mysko had come on as a substitute only 84 seconds earlier when she finished a pass from Danica Pullishy in the 52nd minute for her fourth goal of the season. Jaden Tomaszewski nearly made it 3-0 shortly after the hour mark, hitting the crossbar with an effort from distance.
"I think we were a bit frustrated at 2-0," Raposo said. "We had three or four chances to make it 3-0 and probably kill off the game, and we didn't do that. I think we did more than enough."
Mount Royal pulled one back in the 70th minute when Tamara Djurisic converted a penalty kick, her fourth goal of the year. The Dinos held firm from there. Goalkeeper Cheridan Johnson made two saves, and Calgary closed out the win in front of 228 fans.
The Dinos outshot the Cougars 15-8, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Mount Royal goalkeeper Ella Filek made three saves.
The Dinos will return to action Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. when they host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Tickets are available at GoDinos.com/Tickets.
Mount Royal will host the University of Manitoba Bisons on Saturday, Oct. 17.
