Late goals lift unbeaten UBC past Dinos 2-0

VANCOUVER – The University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team fell to a 2-0 against the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday at Thunderbird Stadium, with two second half goals enough to give the hosts the win.

The loss drops the Dinos to 7-3-1 in Canada West play, while UBC remain unbeaten and improve to 9-0-2.

Calgary and UBC entered the match as the leaders of their respective Canada West divisions. The Dinos looked threatening on the counter-attack in a scoreless first half, with the best chance coming in the 17th minute when Efe Udolu-Joshua's shot was saved by UBC goalkeeper Jack Garner. At the other end, Dinos goalkeeper Oliver Allen turned away a Nicolas Nadeau free kick just three minutes in, and UBC's Henri Godbout fired a chance from close range over the bar late in the half.

UBC came close early in the second half on a low Lucas Dasovic drive and a spinning Markus Rukavina shot, but Calgary were able to hold firm until the 72nd minute. A curling corner from Oliver Herbert took a touch off a Dinos player on its way into the net for the opening goal. Max Comsia doubled the lead in the 83rd minute, finishing off a pass from substitute Theo Afework for his seventh goal of the season.

Allen finished the night with seven saves, including two diving stops late on to deny headers from Eric Lajeunesse and Afework.

After a bye week, the Dinos will return to action Friday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. when they travel to face the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, the first of their final three regular season matches. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.

UBC will travel to face the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack on Friday, Oct. 9 in Kamloops, B.C.
