CALGARY – In her final regular-season match at McMahon Stadium,
Erica Mysko scored the only goal of Seniors' Night as the No. 4-ranked University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team beat the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 1-0 on Friday.
The Dinos have now won 12 straight to open the season and improved to 12-0-0 in Canada West play. Mysko was one of five seniors honoured on the night, along with
Mykena Walker,
Ella Djuranic,
Jaden Tomaszewski and
Sofia DiGiacomo, and all five saw the field. The teams met again at McMahon on Friday, after Calgary took Thursday's match 3-0.
"It was awesome. It was senior night, and since this is my last year, being able to score the game-winner was an incredible feeling," Mysko said. "Getting to celebrate with all my teammates in my final year was also pretty special."
Calgary pressured Lethbridge from the start and outshot the Pronghorns 26-1, but Lethbridge goalkeeper Heidi Andres kept the game within reach. She made five saves in the first half alone, turning aside chances from
Rowyn James,
Brooke Batty,
Danica Pullishy and
Addi White.
Mysko finally broke through in the 27th minute. When a Lethbridge defender tried to clear Djuranic's throw-in out of the box, the ball fell to Mysko, who hit it on the bounce and buried it for her fifth goal of the season. It stood as the winner.
The Dinos kept coming in the second half with 12 more shots, but Andres held firm, finishing the night with eight saves. Pullishy led Calgary with three shots on target.
Calgary goalkeeper
Nicki Filek, making just her second appearance of the season, posted her second shutout. She made one save on a Brynn Birnie shot in the 70th minute, the only shot Lethbridge managed all night.
The Dinos will return to action Saturday, Oct. 24 when they travel to face the MacEwan Griffins at noon. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.
The Pronghorns will host the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.
