LETHBRIDGE – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns scored five second-half tries to pull away for a 37-14 victory against the The University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby team on Saturday.
On a cold windy night as the Pronghorns' celebrated Senior Night, Zina Umeh got Lethbridge on the board in the 10th minute after breaking down the right side for the opening try, before going on to score again less than 10 minutes later, finishing another long run to make it 10-0.
The Dinos pushed back with sustained pressure, highlighted by a strong run from Bomi Lawal in the 15th minute, and were awarded a penalty try in the 22nd minute to cut the deficit to 10-7. Calgary created more chances before the break, but Lethbridge's defence held to preserve its three-point halftime lead.
The Pronghorns took control early in the second half. Millie Teskey scored in the 44th minute and Jayda Morrison converted to make it 17-7. Charli Helland added a try in the 49th minute after Sydney McDonald's kick for touch put Lethbridge in scoring position. In the 57th minute, McDonald broke into the Dinos' end and found Lucy Finnson, who finished the play to make it 27-7.
Calgary responded in the 62nd minute when Kenzie McEachern-Shields crossed over for her second try of the season, with Julia McEwen adding the convert to make it 27-14. Emily Stewart then scored twice for Lethbridge, in the 66th minute and again in the 77th minute on a late attacking sequence down the left side, to close out the scoring.
Lethbridge will travel to face the University of Alberta Pandas on Friday, Oct. 16.
