White nets first goal in 1-0 win of MacEwan

CALGARY – Addi White scored her first U SPORTS goal and Anna Demarbre came up with a key save late in the first half as the Calgary Dinos edged the MacEwan Griffins 1–0 on Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium.

The victory lifted Calgary to the top of the Prairie Division standings, one point ahead of MacEwan in the early going, and marked a strong start to the opening weekend of September.

The breakthrough came in the 24th minute when White capitalized on a chance inside the box. Calgary's corner kick was initially cleared by the MacEwan defence, but the ball fell to the feet of the rookie who uncorked a shot from 28 yards out that just beat Sabrina Alexander outstretched save attempt to make it 1-0.

"As I saw the ball bouncing, it was at a great height to strike," said White. "So I put my toe through it, hoped for the best, and it ended up going over the keeper. We have a big rivalry with MacEwan, so it was nice to get my first goal today."

"I can't thank the girls enough for making [the goal] feel so special. I'm super happy with the result."

MacEwan nearly equalized just before halftime as Raeghan McCarthy broke free in the 44th minute, but Demarbre stood tall, making a critical save to keep the Dinos in front.

Calgary pressed for a second goal after the break, with Grace Moore unleashing a powerful strike in the 73rd minute that was turned aside by Alexander. The Griffins pushed numbers forward late but were unable to break through as the Dinos defense held firm.

White finished with the lone goal of the match, while Demarbre recorded the clean sheet with several timely stops.

The Dinos finish up their weekend homestand Sunday at noon with Alberta coming to McMahon Stadium. Meanwhile, the Griffins remain in Calgary to take on Mount Royal Sunday at 1 p.m. from the MRU campus.
