Vikes claim Jenny Vincent Memorial Game

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's rugby team defeated the University of Calgary, 74-10, in the 15th playing of the Jenny Vincent Memorial Game, Sept. 6 at Wallace Field.

Vincent, a pioneer in women's rugby, was the founder of the University of Victoria women's rugby program and driving force behind getting varsity status for the University of Calgary women's rugby team. Vincent passed away after a battle with cancer in 2010, and now the annual matchup between the Vikes and Dinos is played in her honour.

The Vikes were the first to get on the board, taking a 19-0 lead over the 26 minutes of play on tries from Emily Findlay, Maggie Mackinnon, and being awarded a penalty try. The Dinos put their first points on the board in the 33rd minute, with Allysen Stachiw sending the ball through the uprights for a successful penalty goal to bring the score to 19-3.

Victoria would strike twice more on a second try from Mackinnon and one from Carissa Norsten, along with a Mackinnon convert, to take a 31-3 lead into the halftime break. Out of the break, the Vikes used four tries and three converts to extend their lead to 57-3 with just under 20 minutes still to play.

A lineout for the Dinos saw the visiting side get the ball to Kenzie McEachern-Shields, who pushed her way through Vikes defenders for the try. A successful convert by Stachiw brought the score to 57-10 in favour of Victoria in the 66th minute.

The Vikes added three more scores over the final 14 minutes of play, resulting in the 74-10 victory for the home side.

Up next, the Vikes (2-0) will head to the University of Lethbridge while the Dinos (0-2) will host the University of British Columbia in matches set to take place Sept. 13.
