Griffins edge Dinos for first win of the season

EDMONTON – MacEwan Griffins goalkeeper Oleksandr Popravka made four saves on Seniors' Day to lead his team to a 1-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team at the Edmonton Scottish Dome.

The win was MacEwan's first of the 2025 season as they move to 1-7-3. It may be too late for them to catch a playoff spot. Calgary fell to 7-4-0 after losing their second-straight.

On Sunday, the Dinos outshot the Griffins 11-5 (4-2 on goal), but their best chances were stopped by Popravka.

In particular, the Ukrainian national had a spectacular reactionary save in the 26th minute when he punched away Efe Udolu-Joshua's rocket from inside the box.

Calgary goalkeeper Hany Shafie's only save was equally impressive as he parried Nicolas Luczkiewicz's 52nd minute rising laser from the top of the area over the bar.

Luczkiewicz, also playing in his final home regular season game on Senior Day, was noticeable all afternoon and got rewarded in the 64th when he played in a brilliant pass to a streaking Felix Guité for the match's only goal. In alone, he blasted it past Shafie, who got a piece, but not enough.

Calgary had multiple free kicks from dangerous areas and took nine corner kicks but couldn't find a way to beat the Griffins.

Calgary pressed furiously for the equalizer and also caught a huge break when, in a rare moment, a mix-up over how many minutes of extra time there were between the head official and the fourth saw the game end twice.

The Dinos will look to regroup with a pair of games at home next weekend. They will face the Saskatchewan Huskies on Oct. 4 at the Calgary Soccer Centre, before returning to McMahon Stadium for a matchup versus the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Oct. 5.

The Griffins will be back in action next on Oct. 4 when they visit the Alberta Golden Bears.
