CALGARY – Ethan Cabral scored a penalty in the seventh minute that stood up as the Saskatchewan Huskies handed the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team a 1-0 home loss from the Calgary Soccer Centre Saturday afternoon.
The loss is the third in a row for the Dinos and keeps them in second place in the Canada West Prairie Division with two games left on their schedule.
Meanwhile, Saskatchewan improves to 3-6-1 with four games still to play.
The Huskies made moves early on in the 6th minute, with Ethan Cabral booting his third goal on the season on a penalty kick to make it 1-0 Huskies.
In the 23rd minute, the Dinos saw a hole in the defence and
Isaiah Zarate and
Efe Udolu-Joshua respectively took two back-to-back shots, but all attempts were stopped by the Huskies' goalkeeper, Jaron Slopinski.
In the second half, the Huskies were handed a red card in the 62nd minute; leaving them playing shorthanded for the remaining 28 minutes of the game. Despite this, the Huskies held possession for the majority of the period, setting the pace with some incredible saves by goalie
Hany Shafie, and numerous shot attempts, including one in the 48th minute by Allessandro Calado; however, the attempt was blocked by the Dinos goalie,
Hany Shafie.
Throughout this period, the Dinos made numerous efforts to close the gap; with the urgency obviously picking up as the clock ticked down. Some close shots were made at the 89th minute by
Josral Frederick and the 90th minute by
Aidan Izadi and
Kimia Kassanda; in an attempt to break their shutout. However, the Dinos were unable to break through in the remaining minutes, as the Huskies defense held firm.
Calgary finished the game out-shooting the Huskies 26-5, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal, but the early difference maker from Cabral held up in the 1-0 result.
The result is eerily similar to the Dinos' 1-0 win in Saskatoon earlier this season, when they scored in the third minute and held on from there.
"The boys panicked a little bit in the second half, but they pushed and tried; but when you go a bit frantic, you tend to lose quality...and that happened in the final third of the game," said Dinos head coach
Ramon Mifflin. "Were in a bit of a funk, but hopefully we can regroup quickly and find a win tomorrow."
The Dinos will be at McMahon Stadium to face Lethbridge on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. following the women's game. Meanwhile, the Huskies head to Mount Royal Stadium to take on the MRU on Sunday at 4 p.m..
