Early goals help Dinos coast to 3-0 win

CALGARY – Three first-half goals sent the Calgary Dinos women's soccer team to a convincing 3-0 win over the Manitoba Bisons Friday night under the lights from McMahon Stadium.

With the win, the No. 3 Dinos remain undefeated on the season at 8-0-1, while Manitoba drops to 0-8-1.

Grace Moore got the scoring started on the night, finishing off a cross from Mykena Walker in just the 12th minute of this one.

Just over 60 seconds later, the Dinos struck again, this time with Moore starting the sequence. The fifth-year forward sent a fed a gorgeous threw ball to a streaking Sarah Donick, who took two touches to get around the keeper before burying the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0 just 12:53 into the game.

Fellow senior Aislin Phillips once again added her name to the scoring column after being taken down inside the box and successfully converting the penalty for her third goal of the year.

"I've taken quite a few (penalties) in my days, so I kind of have my routine down," Phillips said of her latest goal. "As soon as the ref hits the whistle, I try to go right away so I don't get in my head and overthink it."

It was a relatively quiet second half, that saw both Calgary's Lauren Houghton and Manitoba's Holly Dyker each make a pair of saves to close this one out.

"I think it's a sign of respect (the way teams defensively play against Calgary)," Dinos head coach Diogo Raposo said. "They know that we love the ball and we have some really talented players, so they're going to make it difficult for us to break them down. We saw that today in the second half. At times, it felt like we ran out of solutions because they were so deep, because there were so many numbers behind the ball. We love having the ball, but we've got to continue to find solutions."

Calgary finished the night with a 13-4 edge in shots, and a 7-3 advantage in shots on net.

The two teams are right back at it on Saturday to wrap up the weekend series for another 7 p.m. game from McMahon Stadium.
