CALGARY – After three years at the University of Calgary,
Nate Petrone has signed a professional contract to play basketball with the Artland Dragons in Germany.
Petrone had an unbelievable final season in the Scarlet & Gold this past year, being named both the Canada West and U SPORTS Men's Basketball Player of the Year. The 6-foot-2 guard helped the Dinos bring home their eighth Canada West championship this past March – taking his game to the next level during the postseason, where he poured in 38 points on 15-of-21 shooting in the championship game.
The Calgary native led all of Canada West and was second in the nation this past season with an average of 24.2 points per game, all while shooting a remarkable 56.8 percent from the field.
Petrone came to the University of Calgary after two seasons at crosstown rival Mount Royal. After sitting out the 2022-23 season due to U SPORTS transfer rules, Petrone immediately showed his capabilities with 33 points in his second game as a Dino, leading his new squad to a big road win over reigning champion Victoria. He finished his first season on the court at Calgary averaging 20.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.
After being named a First Team All-Canadian following the 2023-24 season, Petrone somehow took his game to another level this past year where he finished with 24.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game across all games and was again named a First Team All-Canadian. In addition to being named the top hooper in the nation, Petrone also was named the Canada West Male Athlete of the Year across all sports and was a finalist for the Lois & Doug Mitchell U SPORTS Male Athlete of the Year.
The Artland Dragons are located in Quakenbrück, Germany – a city of roughly 14,000 people located in the northwestern part of the country. The Dragons compete in the Bundesliga ProA league – an 18-team league comprised of teams all across Germany. Artland, which announced a new head coaching hire this past spring, is coming off a 9-25 campaign to see them finish tied for 15th in ProA. The upcoming season is scheduled to get underway in late September.
