CALGARY – A pair of University of Calgary Dinos are returning from Germany with bronze medals following standout performances at the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr.
Sprinter
Georgia Oland claimed bronze with Canada in the women's 4x400-metre relay, while
Martynas Sabaliauskas, a Canada West men's basketball champion with the Dinos, earned bronze with Lithuania.
Canada wrapped up the Games with 11 total medals — two gold, one silver and eight bronze — marking the nation's 11th-best finish in Summer Games history. It was Canada's strongest FISU Summer Games performance since 2005 in Turkey, where the team won 12 medals. The all-time high of 38 medals was achieved in both 1983 and 1993, including a record 12 golds in 1993.
Track & Field
Oland competed in four events for Canada, including two relays. Her strongest individual showing came in the women's 200-metre sprint, where she advanced from her heat with a time of 24.23 seconds and placed fifth in her semifinal.
She played a key role in Canada's bronze-medal finish in the women's 4x400-metre relay. Running the third leg, Oland passed the Indian runner to move Canada into podium position. Anchor Favour Okpali held the lead to secure the bronze.
Fellow Dinos sprinter
Emma Parnetta also represented Canada. She joined Oland in the women's 4x100-metre relay, where the team narrowly missed qualifying for the final.
Basketball
Sabaliauskas averaged 4.8 points per game during the tournament as Lithuania built some early momentum with four straight wins. The team advanced through the preliminary rounds and quarter-finals. They fell to the United States in the semifinals but regrouped to defeat the host nation, Germany, 80–70 in the bronze medal game.
Fellow Dino Daniels Baumanis represented Latvia, putting up a strong showing with a 6.5-point average over the competition. Latvia lost its opening two games but rebounded with four straight victories to finish 11th overall.
Taekwondo
Valerie Ho, representing UCalgary and Canada, competed in the women's team poomsae event. Ho and her teammates scored 8.616 to edge out Italy's 8.449, resulting in a fifth-place finish.
Archery
Brynnleigh Lohner, a kinesiology student at UCalgary, encountered significant challenges due to delays that left her without her equipment. Forced to compete without her own bow, she finished 51st in the women's compound event. She was unable to participate the following day as equipment issues persisted.
