TORONTO – Following their outstanding season with the Calgary Dinos men's basketball team that saw them bring home Canada West gold and U SPORTS silver, head coach
Dan Vanhooren and assistant
Kyle Landry were named to a pair of coaching staffs at the national level, Canada Basketball announced this week.
Vanhooren was named an assistant coach of Canada's U16 Men's National Team for the upcoming FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2025, while Landry will join the U19 Men's National Team for the upcoming FIBA U19 World Cup.
This is the latest role with Canada Basketball for Vanhooren. Last summer, he served as an assistant coach for the FIBA U18 Men's AmeriCup. Vanhooren - who guided the Dinos to a 16-4 record this past season en route to their latest conference banner - has worked with the national team at a number of levels since 2017. Vanhooren was named head coach at Calgary in 2000 and has now led the Dinos to six conference titles and the program's first national championship in 2018.
The FIBA U16 Men's AmeriCup 2025 will run June 2-8, 2025 in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Canada has medalled in every edition of the tournament since its installment in 2009, including a silver medal finish in 2023.
For Landry, this marks his second experience with Canada Basketball at the coaching ranks after debuting last year at the FIBA U18 Men's AmeriCup, where he helped guide the team to bronze. A former player on the Canadian Senior Men's and the 3x3 National Teams and professionally overseas, Landry's long playing career transitioned to coaching in 2021, when he was promoted to lead assistant coach with the Calgary Dinos. In addition to his work with the Dinos, he spent this past Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) season as an assistant coach with the Calgary Surge.
The FIBA U19 Men's Basketball World Cup 2025 will run June 28 to July 6, 2025 in Lausanne, Switzerland. After a bronze medal at the FIBA U18 Men's AmeriCup 2024, Canada will share Group B with China, Slovenia and Germany.
