Rugby 7s season closes with wins over Pandas, 'Horns

LANGLEY, B.C. – It was a big final day for the Calgary Dinos rugby 7s team, posting a pair of shutout wins over provincial rivals in the second and last day of action from the third and final tournament of the season in Langley, B.C.

Calgary got things going on a rain-soaked Saturday at Willoughby Stadium with a score just 1:44 into the opener against Alberta en route to a 22-0 blanking of the Pandas. Sofia Brussoni showed off her speed with a pair of long runs in this one to go with a convert, while Ember Larson and Maori De Jesus-Gilhula both also found the end zone in the opening win.

In the finale, the Dinos carried just a 5-0 lead at the break against Lethbridge following a try from Makayla Joseph. The Horns put up a strong fight, but Willow Beyea punched one in from close range to finish off a push by the Dinos before rookie Julia McEwen added her name to the scoresheet with both a try and convert to leave no doubt in a 17-0 win.

With the two wins, Calgary moved into fourth place in this weekend's tournament ranks and also shot past both provincial rivals in the final overall standings, as well, moving into fourth place following the conclusion of all three tournaments.

The UBC Thunderbirds finished the final tournament of the year with a 5-0 record to go unbeaten over the 2025 season and win their third straight Canada West championship. The Thunderbirds capped off the unbeaten season with a hard-fought 24-19 win over the Victoria Vikes in the final match of the 2025 season.

The Vikes finished 1-1 on the day to take home second place at 4-1 and a Canada West silver medal, while the Trinity Western Spartans split their matches on the day to finish the tournament at 3-2 to take home their first ever Canada West women's rugby medal with a third-place bronze medal.
