Dinos' attack slowed on rainy day in Vancouver

VANCOUVER – Following day one of the third and final Canada West Women's Rugby 7s tournament series under rainy skies at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium it is the host Thunderbirds and the rival UVic Vikes who share top spot in the standings with 12 points each after finishing with 3-0 records.

Looking up at the three-time reigning CW Rugby 7s Champion T-Birds and Vikes are the Trinity Western Spartans, Lethbridge Pronghorns and Alberta Pandas with 6 points apiece thanks to 1-2 records while the Calgary Dinos occupy sixth spot with three points after going 0-3.

The theme of day one was spread out scoring from all teams including the T-Birds who saw eight different players score tries, Adia Pye led the way with five tries over three games while Lethbridge standout Millie Teskey counted four tries and Vikes sparkplug Kayla Warren found the try-zone on three occasions. Several other players recorded two tries in Friday's action.

UBC kicked off day one with a decisive 35-5 victory over Lethbridge, highlighted by Pye scoring three-straight tries in the first half, two of them on breakaway runs up the middle. Millie Teskey tallied the lone Lethbridge try before Rachel Smith completed the bookend scoring for the 'Birds to close out the scoring after also recording the opening points in the first match.

The T-Birds then engaged in a close grind it out battle resulting in a 12-7 victory over the Spartans in their second session ahead of a convincing 40-0 triumph over the Dinos to open the session number 3.

The Vikes opened stop number three on the circuit with a 35-0 victory over Calgary in a match that saw Kayla Warren open the scoring for Victoria by making a heads-up fake pass near the middle of the pitch, juking a Dinos defender then scampering, untouched 50 yards to dive between the goal posts. Vanessa Chiapetta added one try and three converts while the sister act of Ella O'regan and Marin O'regan each found the try-zone to secure the win.

The Vikes would get past Alberta 31-7 and shutout Trinity Western University 22-0 in their following matches to keep a perfect record.

The closest game of the first session saw TWU top Alberta 21-10. The Spartans held just a 7-0 lead at the break on a Kelsa Kempf try before the Pandas narrowed the gap 14-10 in the second half on back-to-back scores from Emerson Hanranah and Emilee Randolph. Alberta looked poised to take the lead as they drove the ball down the pitch but a thunderous tackle by TWU's Hailey Hibbs popped the ball loose and Ava Santen scooped it up and sprinted 60 yards down the left sideline for the put away try, her second of the match.

Lethbridge started session two with an entertaining 27-19 win over the Dinos highlighted by three tries from Millie Teskey, scoring one in the first half and two after the break. Teskey scoring the final points of the game to put it out of reach after Calgary's Bomi Lawal brought her squad within four points at 22-19 late in the second half.

Alberta enjoyed a strong effort in another close contest in game two of the third session, edging past Lethbridge 15-12. The Pandas burst out of the gate with first half scores from Chloe Hedges and Halle Walters to go up 10-0. The Pronghorns didn't go quietly in the second half with some punch counter punch action responding with an Elizabeth La Page try and convert to pull within three at 10-7. Alberta answered back with another score from Walters, increasing the lead to 15-7 before Lethbridge made it interesting late with a try from Jorja Salmon and a 15-12 final.

The final day of the Canada West Women's Rugby 7s tournament gets underway Saturday morning with the Spartans and Dinos kicking off play at 10:00 a.m. PT. The overall 2026 CW 7s series champion will be crowned in the early afternoon from UBC's Thunderbird Stadium. Catch all the action on Canada West TV.
