LANGLEY, B.C. – The UBC Thunderbirds remain the lone unbeaten team in Canada West women's Rugby 7s as they finish Day 1 of the final tournament with a 3-0 record Friday at the Willoughby Stadium at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
The Victoria Vikes were also unbeaten on the opening day, with host Trinity Western Spartans finishing 2-1 and Lethbridge Pronghorns finishing 1-2, while Alberta and Calgary were winless at 0-3.
UBC defeated the Calgary Dinos 34-5, the Alberta Pandas 41-0, and the host Spartans 29-14. Victoria defeated Alberta 28-17, Lethbridge 31-10, and Calgary 14-5. The Spartans opened the day with a 14-12 win over Lethbridge, followed by a 45-0 win over Calgary before ending the day with their 29-14 loss to the Thunderbirds. The Pronghorn's lone win on the day was a 30-17 victory over the Alberta Pandas.
Trinity Western's Kelsa Kemph and UBC's Adia Pye led the scoring on the day, finishing with five tries for 25 points each. Victoria's Ella Douglas finished the day with 22 points on two tries and six conversions. The Thunderbird's Lana Dueck had four tries and 20 points, with TWU's Issy Scholtens (one try, six converts), and UBC's Brooke Roddham (three tries and one convert), and Skye Farish (one try and six converts) all finishing with 17 points.
The teams will finish the season tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. (PT) with Alberta and Calgary kicking off the day's action. Still up for grabs is the second spot between TWU and Victoria and the fourth spot between Calgary, Alberta, and Lethbridge. All games will be played at the Willoughby Stadium at the Langley Events Centre and streamed live on Canada West TV.
