Victoria, B.C. – The University of Calgary Dinos were defeated in three games as they resumed the Canada West Rugby 7s series from Victoria on Saturday afternoon.
The Dinos were returning to competition fresh off an overseas trip to Tokyo, Japan, where they trained with local clubs. It had been nearly a month since teams had competed in Canada West, following the postponement of the tournament in Langley, B.C. due to weather.
Calgary found itself in tough with games against the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds to begin the tournament at UVic's Wallace Field. Despite dropping both matches by scores of 41-5 and 36-7, the Dinos received impressive play by
Bomi Lawal, who scored a try in each game.
Lawal continued her strong performance on the sevens circuit after being named to the Canada West Dream Team in the first tournament.
The Dinos concluded Day 1 with a heartbreaking result versus the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Calgary led in the late seconds, fuelled by tries from
Makayla Joseph and
Melody Kivia, before Lethbridge clinched a 15-14 win with a score in the final moments to close the match.
Elsewhere at the tournament, UBC jumped out to a 3-0 start, followed by Victoria, Lethbridge, and Trinity Western, each posting 2-1 marks on the first day of action.
The Thunderbirds' Skye Farish and Trinity Western's Ava Van Santen led the day's try-scoring efforts, each tallying four.
All teams will cap off group play on Sunday, with Dinos and Spartans opening the second day of action at 12 p.m. MT.
