Senior sendoff: Dinos dominate for 11th straight win

CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos women's basketball team's lockdown defence was once again on full display in a 74-39 win in the final regular season home game of the season Saturday afternoon from the Jack Simpson Gym.

The Dinos allowed just 23 points through the first three quarters, leading by as many as 44 in this one for their 11th win in a row to move to 15-3 in conference play.

Lethbridge drops to 8-10 and is still fighting for a playoff berth with two games to play.

It was all Dinos in the first. Calgary's defence limited the Pronghorns to just two made field goals in the opening 10 minutes of play, with Mya Proctor and Pollyanna Storie each collecting three steals in the first quarter alone. Meanwhile, the Scarlet & Gold offence quickly found its rhythm. Amelie Collin connected on two early triples and Calgary led 20-5 after one.

The Dinos continued to stretch the lead in the second. After the 'Horns cut things to 20-8 after a bucket by Courtney McKee, Calgary answered back with a 10-0 run, capped by a triple from Lilia Skumatova. Tobore Okome picked up a big rebound and put back for Lethbridge, only to see the Dinos once again go on a 10-0 run after an Emma Yarwood fastbreak layup. Calgary led 46-15 at the break.

It was much of the same in the second half. Back-to-back buckets from Kourtney Oss ballooned the Dinos' lead to 61-19, before an and-one play from Megan Weisgerber and a reverse layup from Storie closed the third with Calgary leading 66-22.

Lethbridge put together a nice showing in the fourth, outscoring the Dinos 17-8 over the final 10 minutes. Kyra Collier got things started with a layup before a triple by Abby Stonehocker. Lisa Krikke also added a three for the 'Horns to finish this one out on a strong note as the Dinos cruised to the win.

Kone led all players with a game-high 18 points to go with six rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals. Proctor finished her final home game with 11 points, seven boards and seven steals to tie her career high. Skumatova and Sammy Shields each added nine points as 10 different Dinos scored in the lopsided win.

Following the win, the Dinos recognized their two graduating seniors; Mya Proctor and Darian Mahmi

"We definitely stuck to our identity today," Proctor said postgame. "Defensively, it was a lot better look from us. We're really happy about that.

"It's nostalgic, obviously. I love the Jack, I love this floor and I love playing here in my home city. It's going to be sad to not be here again, but I'm really excited to be going off like this with a good team win."

Mahmi, whose time as a Dino was limited after transfering in before suffering a season-ending injury over the summer, shared similar sentiments.

"I'm sad that this might be the last home game here, but really proud of what we did today," Mahmi said. "There's so much that happens off the court that means just as much as anything that could happen on the court. I'll cherish those memories for the rest of my life."

Calgary now closes out the regular season at Regina next weekend, with both Friday and Saturday's games scheduled for 5 p.m. MT from the UofR campus.
