REGINA – Four players scored in double figures but it wasn't enough as the Dinos women's basketball team saw its 11-game win streak snapped with a 66-62 loss at Regina Friday night inside the CKHS.
In tight game the whole way the featured 14 lead changes, it was the home team that came up with the big play in the closing seconds to hand the Dinos their first loss of the semester, with their last defeat coming all the way back on Nov. 22.
Regina improves to 13-6 on the year, while the Dinos drop to 15-4.
With the result - paired with other scores from across the conference - Calgary is now locked in as the No. 3 seed in the Canada West Prairie Division, with Regina already cemented into the No. 4 spot heading into Saturday's finale.
It was a cold start to the game for the Dinos as they connected on just one of their first six attempts and trailed 10-2 early. But the pick-and-roll game started working for Calgary, with
Mya Proctor,
Pollyanna Storie,
Kourtney Oss and
Milica Gajic all getting easy looks at the bucket to make a late push. A three from
Lilia Skumatova closed the scoring in the first and capped a 9-0 run by the Dinos for a 19-17 lead.
Calgary's defence showed out strong in the second, limiting Regina to just 10 field goal attempts in the frame, but the Cougars were able to connect on six of those. Meanwhile, the hot finish in the first for the Dinos didn't carry over as they shot just 5-20 in the second and trailed 36-32 at the break.
The defensive battle continued in the third. Calgary limited Regina to just 3-15 shooting, but connected on just 5-14 of its own shots. A late triple by Storie gave the Dinos a 49-46 lead, but three late free throws by the home team tied things up after three to set up the exciting finish.
Things continued to go back and forth in the fourth. Storie gave the Dinos a 54-53 lead after a triple with 6:45 to play, only to see the Cougars answer right back. A driving layup by
Myriam Kone put Calgary up 58-57 with 4:08 left, but Cara Misskey hit a clutch three with 2:57 remaining and Regina wouldn't trail again. The Dinos got with in one after a triple by Proctor and a free throw from
Amélie Collin with 26 seconds left, but the Cougars iced the game away at the foul line for the four-point win.
Storie finished the game with a team-high 15 points for Calgary. Kone, Collin and Proctor each tallied 11 in this one, with Kone registering a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Jade Belmore led all players with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Misskey came up big in key moments for the Cougars and finished with 17 points.
Calgary finished with a 14-6 edge in second-chance points and a 22-16 advantage in points off turnovers. Meanwhile, the Cougars had an 11-4 finish in fast-break points. Calgary was whistled for 19 fouls to Regina's 13 - with a 9-1 difference toward the Scarlet & Gold in the fourth quarter.
The two teams will close out the regular season Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. MT.
