Tiebreaker goes the other way as Dinos close trip to nationals

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The Calgary Dinos men's curling team's season came to an end Thursday afternoon at the U SPORTS / Curling Canada Championships.

The fourth and final day of round-robin action started on a high note for the Dinos as the took down previously undefeated Laurier with a 6-5 win that went the distance. But a 9-4 loss to Carleton saw Calgary finish with a 4-3 record – placing them in a four-way tie for third place, with the tiebreaker favouring UNB and Carleton.

This marks the second time in three seasons since the program returned that Calgary's men's team has advanced to the U SPORTS / Curling Canada Championships, making a big improvement on their 2-5 record back in 2023.

Thursday's action started with a big win for the Dinos. Going up against a Laurier squad that entered the day a perfect 5-0, the Golden Hawks were first on the board as they stole one in the second. Calgary answered back in a big way with a four spot in the third – the most scored in a single end against Laurier all tournament thus far. The Dinos then held strong against a push back, limiting their opponents to just one point in each of the next two ends before scoring two in sixth for a 6-3 lead. The Hawks got one in each of the final two ends, but it wasn't enough as the Scarlet & Gold held on for the big win.

But the excitement only lasted so long. In the final match of the round robin, it was Carleton jumping out to a big 4-0 lead after two ends. Calgary fought back by scoring two in both the third and fifth, but the Ravens come up with big shots in the fourth and sixth to put this one to bed.

The loss, combined with wins by UNB and Brock, created the logjam of teams knotted up at 4-3, with the Dinos just missing a spot in the semifinals due to tiebreakers.

Thursday's action was the final of the year for Max Cinnamon, Ethan Drysdale, Michael Keenan, Ky Macaulay, and Kenan Wipf, who helped the Dinos claim their second Canada West silver medal in three seasons and earn another trip to the U SPORTS Championships.
