LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – Headlined by a massive six-point end, the Calgary Dinos men's curling team took down Regina, 7-2, in a rematch of last month's Canada West Championship final.
The Dinos also cruised to a 7-1 win over host Lethbridge earlier in the day and are now one of two teams sitting at 3-0 through two days of round-robin action at the U SPORTS / Curling Canada Championships at the Lethbridge Curling Club.
Regina – last year's national champion – was on the board first with one in the second, but the Dinos answered back in a big way. Already sitting five stones, skip
Kenan Wipf had the last shot and made it count – executing a perfect hit and roll to give Calgary six in the third end for the early commanding lead.
"It was a sneaky six where angles were in our favour," DInos second-year
Ky Macaulay said. "We had one corner guard that everything just kind of happened to be behind and they had a freeze that went a few inches deep, and it just rolled off enough to give us a big weight shot and rack them up."
Calgary needed just one more in the sixth to close this one out and remain perfect.
"It was really good, especially on a day like today when it's a rematch of both teams you saw at CanWest," Macaulay said. "We played against Regina in that round robin, beat them, went to the final against them, lost. So coming out tonight playing against them was one of those games where it's like, okay, little bit of redemption on the board, settle the score. So it felt really good. The guys have been playing great, communication as a team has been perfect and we're just really jelling this week, so it's just lovely to see."
Earlier in the day, the Dinos scored two right out of the gates against Lethbridge and then stole 1, 2, 1 and 1 in the following four ends for a 7-1 win through six ends.
"We're just really of the mindset of one game at a time, one rock at a time, and just really commit as a four-player team," said Macaulay. "All four of us need to be on the same page for every shot and we're really just taking it one shot at a time."
The Dinos are back in action Wednesday with two more games, starting at 12:30 p.m. against UNB before going up against Memorial in another 8:30 p.m. showdown that will be streamed live through Curling Canada's YouTube page.
