Dinos score three unanswered to level quarter-final series

EDMONTON – The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team stormed back in the third period with three unanswered goals to beat the Alberta Golden Bears 3-2 and even their best-of-three Canada West Quarter-Final series.

Leading 2-0 on the scoreboard, holding a 30-13 shot lead, and generating all sorts of chances, it seemed the Golden Bears were on their way to a series sweep. However the Dinos found another gear with their season on the line, and have forced a decisive Game 3 on Sunday night.

Connor Gutenberg and Jake Gricius scored 53 seconds apart early in the third to tie the game, with the eventual winner coming off an odd-man rush goal from Logen Hammett with six minutes to go in regulation.

Carl Tetachuk backed up his stellar Game 1 performance with another excellent game, stopping 39 Alberta shots in the win.

"Even the last part of the second we had some momentum going. We just had to hit the net. We had some chances we fired over the net, and were trying to be too perfect," said Dinos head coach Mark Howell. "Then we got the power play goal. And when you get the first one, you get a bit of belief. Really gutsy effort from the guys."

It marks the first Alberta loss to Calgary at home in the playoffs since 1992.

Alberta led 2-0 through 40 thanks to goals from Konrad Belcourt and Connor McClennon early in the second but were unable to extend their lead further. The Bears outshot Calgary 17-10 in the first, and 13-6 in the second. The Bears now have 81 shots through two games, with Tetachuk making 77 saves in total, being named Game 2's first star.

"This time of year he always finds a way. He's absorbed a lot of shots over these first two games," said Howell of his star goalie. "He's a gamer. Even at the end, sealing the crease, jam plays, shutting the door in the final seconds. He's a competitive guy who is dialed in this time of year."

After a scoreless first, Belcourt opened the scoring 2:12 into the second, one-timing in a cross-ice feed from Eric Florchuk. The Bears doubled the lead just over a minute later, with McClennon beating Tetachuk over the shoulder off a turnover in the Dinos zone.

Tetachuk made 11 saves in the second, keeping the game within reach through 40.

Gutenberg cut the lead in half, beating a screened Tyler Palmer with a wrist shot from the point. Gricius tied the game moments later, taking a feed from behind the Bears net, and getting a quick shot past Palmer with no defender in the area.

Hammett broke the deadlock seven minutes later, taking a drop pass from Colson Gengenbach, and beating Palmer short side on a two-on-one rush.

The Bears last efforts were turned aside by Tetachuk, who made 11 saves on 11 shots in the third. McClennon was denied in the final minute, jamming away at a loose puck that never got past the Dinos' goalies pad.

Puck drop for Game 3 is 7 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.
