CALGARY – Shane Farkas stopped 15 shots to lead the Mount Royal Cougars to a 5-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team on Saturday at Father David Bauer Arena.
A night after the Dinos earned a convincing 4-0 victory in front of a record-breaking crowd at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Cougars responded with a shutout of their own while five different skaters found the back of the net.
The win moves Mount Royal into first place in Canada West's West Division, one point ahead of the UBC Thunderbirds. The Cougars are now 18-6-0-0 on the season, while the Dinos slip to 13-9-0-2.
On Saddledome ice, Calgary managed to take advantage of the scoring opportunities they were handed. Back at home though after an eight-shot first period, the Dinos couldn't match that total in the final 40 minutes of the contest.
Mount Royal netted the game's first goal with five minutes left in the first period when Layton Feist set up Justin Lies with a quick cross-ice pass.
A mere 65 seconds later, Teague Patton scored his first goal in Canada West to make it a 2-0.
Dinos goaltender
Carl Tetachuk, who was named the first star at the Crowchild Classic on Friday, made a couple of highlight reel saves late in the first to keep the deficit at two as the Cougars fired 19 shots on goal.
The Cougars kept coming through. Goals by Dawson Milliken and Robbie Holmes pushed the advantage to four through two periods.
Tetachuk was relieved by
Carl Stankowski in the third period. He would turn away four of the five shots he faced in a quiet final frame, with the only goal coming off the stick of Blake Stevenson.
The Dinos will look to rebound next weekend when they take on the MacEwan Griffins in a home-and-home set, starting on Friday, Feb. 7. Mount Royal will look to maintain their grasp on first place when they host the Regina Cougars from Feb. 7-8.
