CALGARY – Hayden Pakkala scored both the game-tying and shootout-winning goals, while goaltender
Carl Stankowski delivered a stellar performance to lead the No. 5-ranked University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team to a dramatic 3-2 shootout win over the No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
For the second straight night, Calgary rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and extended its win streak to five games, improving to 10-2-0. The Huskies head into a bye week on a two-game skid and now sit at 6-3-1.
Dinos head coach
Mark Howell praised his team's resilience and growth.
"We just have to keep building on the positives," Howell said. "We've got 16 new players, so there are still a lot of nuances in how we play. We're taking strides in the right direction, and we'll keep moving forward."
Saskatchewan opened the scoring in the first period when Braxton Buckberger pounced on a rebound in front of Stankowski. Minutes later, Rhett Rhinehart doubled the lead with a power play goal, giving the visitors a 2-0 edge after 20 minutes.
The Dinos responded in the second. First-year defenceman
Tre Fouquette notched his first Canada West goal after his point shot trickled across the line following a quick whistle to cut the deficit to one.
"It was super nice to help the team get that win," said Fouquette. "I think [the rookies] are making a really positive impact on the league and showing people that we're not here to fool around."
Both goaltenders stood tall through most of the third period, with Stankowski and Saskatchewan's Jordan Kooy trading key saves. With just over three minutes remaining, Calgary pulled its goalie for the extra attacker, and Pakkala buried a shot top shelf to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime.
After a tense extra frame that saw Stankowski make a crucial goal-line save to keep the game alive, the contest went to a shootout. Pakkala opened the scoring with a shot to the high blocker side, while Stankowski shut the door on all three Saskatchewan shooters to seal the win for Calgary.
Stankowski and Kooy both finished with 26 saves.
The Dinos head to Langley next week for a weekend series against the Trinity Western Spartans, Nov. 14–15. The Huskies will have a bye before visiting the MacEwan Griffins, Nov. 21–22.
