BRANDON, Man. – A red-hot start to Friday's game saw the University of Calgary Dinos jump out to a 34-18 lead after one and never look back, boat racing the Brandon Bobcats by a final score of 98-67 from the Healthy Living Centre.
Calgary shot a blistering 68% from the floor in the first – including an eye-popping 7-11 from three – and finished the night shooting 50% (37-74) in the lopsided win to move to 3-0 on the year. The Bobcats drop to 3-2 with the loss.
Amelie Collin led the way for the Dinos with a team-high 22 points to go with seven steals and six assists.
Newcomer
Raya Hafez is quickly making her mark and poured in 19 points, going 5-6 from behind the arc in just 17 minutes on the court.
Milica Gajic (11 points) and Christina Geraldo (10 points) were the only other Dinos to score in double figures in this one in a balanced attack all around by the Scarlet & Gold.
Macaya Copeland was the leader for Brandon in this one, tallying a game-high 24 points on 10-23 shooting to go with five rebounds.
Calgary won the opening tip, flipped the ball to
Pollyanna Storie and the senior drilled a three in the first five seconds of the game and the Dinos led the rest of the way. Calgary connected on six of its first seven shots to jump out to a 14-4 lead just three minutes into the game. Nine different players scored in the first quarter alone for the Dinos as they led 34-18 after one.
The Bobcats used a burst to start the second quarter to briefly make a game out of this one. A free throw from Ella Averill with 3:36 to play in the first half cut the Dinos' lead to just four at 42-38. But Calgary responded with a 12-3 run capped by a layup from
Sydney Milum and led 54-45 at the break.
The second half was all Dinos, holding Brandon to just 11 points in each of the final two quarters. Second-year forward
Emma Yarwood had a couple nice buckets in the third to help Calgary lead 74-56 heading into the fourth. A triple from Collin ballooned the lead to 87-57 still with seven minutes to play and another layup from Milum gave Calgary its largest lead of the night at 93-59.
In all, 11 players scored for the Dinos in the win.
The two teams are right back at it Saturday at 4 p.m. MT.
