Defence dominates as Dinos coast to 4-0

BRANDON, Man. – It was a dominant defensive performance by the University of Calgary Dinos in an 80-48 win over Brandon Saturday afternoon from the Healthy Living Centre.

The win caps the weekend sweep for Calgary and moves them to 4-0 on the young season, with all four wins coming on the road. Brandon falls back to .500 at 3-3.

Calgary held the Bobcats to shoot just 32% overall for the game, including surrendering just one field goal in the second quarter that saw the Dinos outscore the home team 25-6.

In a game where no Dinos player saw the floor for more than 25 minutes, four players scored in double figures. Christine Geraldo led the way with 15 points and five rebounds. Raya Hafez poured in 12, Kourtney Oss stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points and seven boards, while Pollyanna Stories added 10 points and five rebounds.

Amelie Collin also had a nice night, finishing with eight points, six assists, six steals and five boards.

Piper Ingalls led the way for Brandon in this one, finishing with a team-high 11 points.

It was a bit of a choppy first quarter for both squads, but the Dinos thrived in creating the chaos and turned defence into offence on a number of occasions. A steal by Lilia Skumatova led to a fast break layup from Milica Gajic for a 15-7 Dinos' lead. Collin drilled a late triple as Calgary led 20-13 after one.

The Dinos put the clamps down in the second. After Ella Averill hit a three to open the scoring in the frame, Calgary didn't allow Brandon to connect on another field goal attempt before halftime. Storie drilled a triple of her own in the closing seconds as the Dinos built a 45-19 lead at the break.

Things were relatively even in the third, with Calgary stretching the lead to 61-30 after a three from Hafez. Geraldo also hit a triple midway through the fourth to give the Dinos their largest lead of the night at 73-39 as the two teams coasted home from there.

Calgary is now 4-0 in conference play with an average margin of victory of 26.

Next up is the home opener for Calgary as they get set to host Fraser Valley from inside the Jack Simpson Gym next weekend. Friday's opener is set for a 6 p.m. start, while Saturday's game has a 4 p.m. tip time.
