CALGARY –
Amélie Collin tied the University of Calgary women's basketball program record for career steals as the No. 4 Dinos rolled to an 80–52 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen at Pack The Jack on Friday night inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
A fifth-year guard, Collin has now compiled 253 steals in her university career, matching the mark set by Dinos Hall of Famer Leighanne Doan. She also moves into a tie for eighth all-time in Canada West history, with plenty of time to chase the conference record of 308 held by former Alberta Panda Ashley Wigg.
"It feels pretty good, I won't lie," said Collin. "I did not know until last weekend that I could beat the record."
With the win, Calgary remains undefeated at 7-0, while Winnipeg falls to 2-4.
Calgary wasted no time asserting control, exploding for a 32–18 first quarter behind a barrage of three-pointers.
Milica Gajic opened the scoring from deep, followed by back-to-back triples from
Christine Geraldo. Collin and
Raya Hafez each added a pair of threes as the Dinos shot nearly flawless from long range in the opening frame. Calgary maintained control with crisp ball movement and aggressive defence, while the Wesmen showed brief moments of resistance with flashes of creativity and hustle on the boards.
The Dinos carried their momentum into the second quarter, keeping pressure on the Wesmen and stretching the lead to 50–26 at halftime. Gajic and
Mackenzie Henderson each added another triple, while
Kourtney Oss delivered one of the game's grittiest sequences — fighting through three defenders for an offensive rebound before starting a fast break finished by Gajic. Calgary dominated the boards in the first half with 23 rebounds while shooting 63% from three.
Winnipeg continued to battle, forcing turnovers and contesting shots even as the deficit grew. But Calgary's depth and shooting proved overwhelming. Hafez added two more threes,
Emma Yarwood knocked down another, and Geraldo led the Dinos with 12 points through three quarters. Raia Guinto finished as Winnipeg's top scorer with 11 points and three assists.
In the fourth, Collin made history, tying the program steals record with her 253rd career takeaway. Calgary closed the night with five players in double figures, while late threes from Hafez, strong finishes from Geraldo, and key makes from Gajic and Henderson sealed the 28-point win. Geraldo finished with a team-high 19 points.
"Every game, we aim to come out strong. We still need to tighten up defensively, but we're all on the same page," said Collin. "We're focusing on limiting their opportunities and making them take the last shot."
The Dinos and Wesmen meet again on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the Jack Simpson Gym.
