Dinos extend win streak to eight with sweep of Wesmen

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team extended their unbeaten run with a 75-72 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday at the Jack Simpson Gym.

It was a historic day for Amélie Collin, who broke the program record for career steals, pushing her total to 259.

The win extends Calgary's streak to eight games in Canada West competition, while Winnipeg falls to 2-5.

"Our objective was to apply pressure, and we did that full court," said Christine Geraldo. "We've been putting in a lot of work, and we just need to keep trusting the process as we head into the winter."

Winnipeg came out strong, opening with a 10-2 lead, but Calgary quickly responded with a 16-0 run fueled by rebounding and pressure defence. Kourtney Oss led the surge, pulling down eight rebounds in the opening frame and creating multiple second-chance opportunities.

Geraldo added points and a key steal that helped ignite the run, while Milica Gajic sank a three-pointer to spark the Dinos' offence. Emma Yarwood contributed mid-range jumpers, and Collin added a transition layup off a steal as Calgary forced several turnovers late in the quarter. Winnipeg hit back-to-back perimeter shots to close the frame, but Calgary retained control of the tempo and the boards.

Mackenzie Henderson opened the second quarter with a three-pointer, and Oss continued her dominance in the paint, reaching 13 rebounds by halftime. Her versatility was on display with blocks, offensive rebounds, and a steal that kept Calgary in command. Winnipeg found some rhythm at times, but every push was quickly answered by the Dinos. Pollyanna Storie added a jumper and a corner three to extend the lead, helping Calgary head into halftime with a 44-30 advantage.

Calgary increased the pressure in the third quarter. Henderson set the tone with an early steal, while Collin added multiple steals, continuing her historic weekend. Despite a few baskets from Winnipeg, Calgary remained in control. Storie added another layup, while Gajic and Yarwood dominated the boards. Winnipeg had a late scoring burst, but Calgary's steady play kept the game well in hand.

Collin finished with a game-high 21 points for the Dinos, while Storie and Geraldo scored 15 and 13, respectively. The Wesmen were led by Jazmin Birch with 12 points.

With the weekend sweep, Calgary continues to build momentum. The Dinos will hit the road next weekend to face the Manitoba Bisons, Nov. 28-29, while the Wesmen return home to host the Alberta Pandas.
