REGINA –
Jess Martens' early power-play goal stood up as the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team opened the 2025-26 campaign with a 1-0 win over Regina from the Co-operators Centre Friday night.
Amelia Awad made 27 saves to pick up the shutout in win No. 1 on the year for Calgary.
After drawing an early penalty, the Dinos possessed the puck in their attacking zone. Newcomer
Alex Spence fed
Caitlyn Perlinger, who wristed one toward the net. Regina goalkeeper Amy Swayze made the initial save, but the rebound went right to a charging Martens who buried it for the 1-0 lead at the 9:31 mark of the first.
From there, the Dinos defence did the rest, limiting the Regina attack. Meanwhile, Awad was perfect in net for Calgary in this one, stonewalling all 27 shots she faced for her third career shutout.
The Dinos appeared to have scored an insurance goal with just 2:50 remaining in the third on a play similar to their opening goal. This time, Spence fired a shot on frame that was not covered up and
April Klarenbach was there for the tap in, but the officials ruled interference as there were bodies strewn about in front of the net during the play.
Regina finished the night with a slight 27-25 edge in shots on the night.
The 1-0 Calgary win breaks a trend of some high-scoring affairs between these two teams that had combined for a whopping 55 total goals in their previous 10 games.
Saturday's opening-weekend finale is set for a 5 p.m. start.
