Swayze keeps Dinos at bay for weekend split

REGINA – The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team suffered a hard-luck 3-0 loss to Regina to settle for a split in the season-opening series Saturday afternoon from the Co-operators Centre.

One day after a 1-0 win in the opener, the Dinos attack finished with a 31-20 edge in shots in Saturday's rematch but they couldn't solve Amy Swayze in this one.

Tessa Stewart scored her first of the season with 3:32 left in the second before the Cougars added a pair of empty netters in the game's waning moments.

After a scoreless first, the Dinos offence came to life in the second. Calgary out-shot the home squad 16-8 in the frame, but it was Regina that was able to find the back of the net on a nice finish from Stewart to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Calgary kept the pressure up in the third, but Swayze was a brick wall in this one, stopping 12 more Dinos' shots in the third.

The Dinos return home next weekend, going up against city rival Mount Royal. After Friday's contest at MRU, Calgary will finally have their home opener Saturday with a 5 p.m. contest from Father David Bauer Arena.
