Dinos battle back but fall in shootout

CALGARY – 60 minutes of regulation plus five more of three-on-three would not be enough for the Mount Royal University Cougars and University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey teams.

The rematch of Friday night's barnburner at Father David Bauer did not disappoint a packed crowd at Flames Community Arenas. Similar to Friday, the Dinos overcame a three-goal Cougar lead, but this time Calgary forced overtime and ultimately a shootout before the host Cougars came out with a 5-4 shootout win.

After picking up an assist in his first career Canada West game on Friday, Vaughn Watterodt wasted no time making an impact in his home debut. The former Saskatoon Blade stick-checked Dinos' veteran Jake Gricius, stealing the puck and giving himself a break. All alone on the left flank, Watterodt sniped a shot over the shoulder of Carl Tetachuk to make it 1-0 just 30 seconds into Saturday's contest.

Mount Royal was able to grab a 2-0 lead halfway through the period. The Dinos were whistled for a penalty, allowing the high-powered MRU powerplay to go to work. Josh Tarzwell potted his 10th goal of the year, tying him with Justin Lies for the team lead.

Clay Hanus extended his league lead in points with another powerplay goal, coming off a wrist shot from the point through traffic.

The first period of the game was one of the best Mount Royal had played all season and forced the Dinos to make a change between the pipes. Connor Martin came into the game, relieving veteran netminder Carl Tetachuk. The decision by Dinos head coach Mark Howell sparked his locker room as Calgary began to claw back.

Dinos' captain Noah King got his squad on the board a few minutes into the second with a point shot that hit a Cougar body, fooling goaltender Shane Farkas.

Ten minutes later, Colson Gengenbach scored his 10th of the year on a Dinos' powerplay. The Calgary star's continued success against Mount Royal brought the visiting team within one.

Early in the third, the Cougars restored their two-goal cushion. Dawson Milliken swiftly stuffed a backhand shot past an unsuspecting Dinos' goalie to make it 4-2.

The restoration of the multi-goal lead only lasted 58 seconds as Jadon Joseph scored his second of the year.

Calgary completed the comeback moments later with a goal from rookie sensation Dylan Sydor.

Despite a late powerplay that carried over into overtime for MRU, the Cougars and Dinos would need a shootout.

Connor Bouchard made a spectacular move to score first for Mount Royal. Jayden Wiens added another in the third round while Shane Farkas made two saves to seal the win for the Cougars.

Calgary has another home-and-home set next weekend, taking on the Alberta Golden Bears - first in Calgary on Friday before traveling to Edmonton Saturday.

Both games can be streamed live on Canada West TV - Powered by BioSteel.
