Dinos continue new year win streak at Kenyon Court

CALGARY — Four players reached double-digits in points as the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 79-56 at Kenyon Court on Friday night.

Myriam Kone led the way, scoring 16 points for Calgary, while Mya Proctor (14), Milica Gajic (12), and Kourtney Oss (10) also had big nights offensively. With the win, the Dinos improved to 10-3 and extended their undefeated run to six conference games.

Mount Royal's top scorer was Nora Luca, who finished with 12 points. The Cougars fall back to 9-6 on the season.

The Dinos brought pressure in the first quarter and seized an early 12-point lead, most of which came in the late stages and was boosted by a pair of late threes by Pollyanna Storie and Gajic.

Mount Royal's Maddy Hooper opened the second quarter with a three-pointer. However, Kourtney Oss immediately responded by draining a three in the hands of a Cougars defender. Calgary's shooting beyond the arc was consistent on Friday, as they finished with 10 of 24 for 41.7 percent.

In the second quarter, Luca and Jenika Martens posed the biggest threats for Mount Royal, but the home team trailed by 11 at halftime.

The Calgary defence held Mount Royal to a mere seven points in the third quarter, while Kone drilled a three-point buzzer-beater to make the score 65-40 heading into the fourth.

The Cougars outscored the Dinos 16-14 in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. Calgary never trailed on Friday and pushed their lead to as large as 32 in the win.

The Crowchild Classic continues on Saturday when the Dinos and Cougars return to Kenyon Court.
