CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos women's basketball team showed off their team defence and grit, completely locking down their crosstown rivals in a 60-41 win over Mount Royal Saturday afternoon from Kenyon Court.
With the win, the No. 7 Dinos move to 11-3 in conference play this season, while MRU falls to 9-7,
Mya Proctor had the hot hand early for the Dinos, scoring 10 points in the opening quarter on a perfect 5-5 shooting. MRU did a nice job on the boards early, leading to four early second-chance points to keep the Cougars close at 19-11 after one.
Mount Royal came out strong to start the second quarter, holding the Dinos scoreless for nearly the first four minutes and closing the gap to 19-17. But the Calgary offence started to get back in rhythm thanks to some smothering defence, going back ahead 36-24 at the half after a late triple from
Kourtney Oss.
Proctor finished the first half with 14 points on 7-7 shooting in 14 minutes.
With both defences picking up the pressure, the Dinos clamped down and allowed just six points in the third quarter, holding MRU to go just 3-17 (17.6 percent) in the frame. Meanwhile, the Calgary attack kept getting results as the Scarlet & Gold used an 11-2 run to build a 49-30 edge with 10 minutes to play.
With the game already all but decided, the Dinos' offence cooled off a bit in the fourth. It took until the 4:41 mark of the final quarter for Proctor to see her perfect shooting night come to an end with her first miss of the game, finishing the night with 16 points on 8-10 shooting.
Calgary finished the game holding their city rivals to shoot just 26.7 percent (16-60) overall for the game, including allowing just one three-pointer on 13 attempts (7.7 percent). The defence forced 27 turnovers and collected six steals – three coming to Amelie Collin – while also tallying seven blocks on the night in a dominant defensive showing.
Proctor finished with a game-high 16 points to lead the way for the Dinos, while
Lilia Skumatova also scored in double figures with 12 points on 5-7 shooting.
Myriam Kone guided the offence with nine points, eight rebounds and five assists while Oss stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, seven boards, two steals and two blocks.
Nora Luca had a team-high 12 points on 4-17 shooting to go with 14 rebounds to lead the way for Mount Royal.
The Dinos return to their home court next weekend, welcoming Brandon to the Jack Simpson Gym for two games, starting Friday.
