WINNIPEG – All 10 Dinos scored in a convincing 76-44 win for the University of Calgary women's basketball team to finish the weekend with a road sweep over Winnipeg Saturday from the Duckworth Centre.
Behind a smothering defensive performance, the Dinos limited the Wesmen to just 26 points through the first 30 minutes of action, holding them to connect on just 23.5 percent (16-68) of their field goal attempts for the game, including going just 1-22 (4.5%) from three-point range.
Myriam Kone once again led all players in scoring with 14 points on 5-6 shooting to go with eight rebounds and a pair of steals.
Lilia Skumatova was in double-figurers for the second consecutive night with 13 points, while
Mya Proctor continued her strong start to her final semester with 11 points, five rebound, three assists and two blocks.
Jazmin Birch and Raia Guinto each tallied eight points on the night to lead the way for Winnipeg.
After Guinto opened the game with a triple, it was all Dinos the rest of the way in the first. Back-to-back buckets from
Pollyanna Storie and
Milica Gajic gave the Dinos a 19-9 lead after one, as Calgary shot 64.3% (9-14) as a team in the first.
It was much of the same in the second. Already leading 35-18, Skumatova and Kone each connected from behind the arc before Skumatova and
Amélie Collin each added layups to make it 46-20 at the break.
Defence was the name of the game in the third, as Calgary outscored Winnipeg 10-6 in the frame for a 56-26 lead after three.
With the game already all but sealed up, the Dinos were able to show off their depth down the stretch as
Sammy Shields (seven points),
Emma Yarwood (six) and
Elana Sireni (three) all saw the court for season-high minutes, with Yarwood also racking up four rebounds and four blocks.
The Dinos finished the game shooting 50.0% (27-54) from the floor to improve to 7-3 on the year, while Winnipeg falls to 4-6.
Up next, this now starts a stretch of eight games that will all be played in Calgary, starting next weekend when Manitoba comes to campus for a pair of games inside the Jack Simpson Gym, starting Friday, Jan. 17.
