Aria's header secures point for Dinos

CALGARY – A pair of goals created some late-game excitement during a 1-1 tie between the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team and the Thompson Rivers WolfPack at Dinosaur Field on Saturday.

It took until the final 10 minutes of the match for either team to find the scoresheet and ultimately earn a point in a hard-fought match.

The Dinos hold a 4-1-3 record through eight games while the WolfPack progresses to 1-5-1.

After a scoreless 79 minutes, Thompson Rivers finally broke through. Ranjeet Brar sent a perfect ball through the middle of the field that found Abdel Coulibaly. The rookie eluded a pair of defenders and deposited his first goal of the season into the right corner of the net.

The lead did not last long though.

Off a corner kick, in the 86th minute, the Dinos thought they had a penalty kick coming from a handball. Moments later, after the ball was cleared and the Calgary attack resumed. A clearance was made at midfield that hopped in front and over the goalkeeper into a space where only Soliman Aria could head it into the goal.

The battle continued late into stoppage time, but neither side could find a go-ahead tally.

"This is a very difficult league, and Thompson Rivers was organized and countered us well. Given the conditions of the field, we were able to generate good shots but couldn't get the ball in the back of the net and at the end of the day, that is how you win games," said Dinos head coach Ramon Mifflin. "Now we flip the page and get ready to face Fraser Valley tomorrow. We want to keep doing what we're doing and be active and energetic. We moved the ball well and created good opportunities, and we'll take the point and move forward."

The Dinos will face the Fraser Valley Cascades on Sunday at Dinosaur Field. The game gets underway at 2:15 p.m.

The WolfPack will travel north to Edmonton to face the Alberta Golden Bears on Sunday at 1:15 p.m.
