Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Dinos Communications

Antoniuk scores, assists in 2-1 win over UBCO

Kelowna, B.C.Owen Antoniuk found the back of the net just before halftime and Kimia Kassanda scored early in the second as the Calgary Dinos men's soccer team held on from there for a 2-1 road win over UBCO Sunday afternoon from Nonis Sports Field.

The win wraps up a perfect 2-0 swing through B.C. by the Dinos and concludes a four-game spurt away from home going 3-1 to move to 4-1-2 in Canada West. The Heat fall to 2-4-2 in conference play.

After allowing just two goals against through their first four games combined, the Dinos found themselves in an unusual position as they fell behind early in this one. Starting the play by carrying the ball down the right sideline, Andrew Matsugu found an unmarked Rory Clements, who made no mistake for his first of the season to make it 1-0 Heat just 1:39 into Sunday's game.

Midway through the first, Calgary cranked up the pressure on UBCO with six shots in a four-minute span and thought they found the equalizer as Gianmarco Plenzik's blast from the top of the box beat the keeper but pinged off the crossbar and out of danger.

There would be no doubt, however, in the first-half stoppage time. Plenzik gathered a pass inside the box and sent a low pass across the face of goal where Antoniuk was waiting for the back-post tap in to make it 1-1 just before the break.

Just over four minutes of official gametime later, the Dinos were at it again. Soliman Aria collected the ball in the corner and drove at goal. He sent a low cross through the box where Antoniuk came charging and fired, only to see Ronan Woodroffe make a spralling save. But, Kassanda was there for the rebound and one-timed it home to give the Dinos a 2-1 lead just 49:27 into the second.

Woodroffe made several impressive saves down the stretch, including thwarting a pair of point-blank chances by the Dinos in the game's closing minutes to keep it a one-score game, but Calgary calmly closed this one out for the 2-0 weekend.

It's back to campus next weekend for the Dinos as they get set to host Thompson Rivers and Fraser Valley in a pair of women's-men's doubleheaders on campus, starting Saturday.
