CALGARY –
Hany Shafie made four saves for the University of Calgary Dinos, while Armaan Thawer came up with three save for the Lethbridge Pronghorns in a physical 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon from Dinosaur Field.
With the result, Calgary finishes the first weekend of the season with four points following Saturday's 3-0 win, while Lethbridge sits in second place in the Prairie Division after a pair of 0-0 draws.
"This was a hard-fought game," Dinos first-year head coach
Ramon Mifflin said following Sunday's result. "It's always difficult playing the second day (of a back-to-back). We burned a lot of energy yesterday and had a really good win. Today, we just lacked a little bit of the legs that we needed. But everybody contributed against a difficult opponent and we got a point, which is always important."
Calgary held the lion's share of possession in the first half and out-shot the Pronghorns 6-1 in the first 45 minutes, but neither team could crack the opposing defence in a physical first half.
The tables flipped for the majority of the second half, as Lethbridge fired 12 shots after the break. Karim Bey had a nice shot in the 64th minute, as did Cole Rosenlund in the 72nd, but Shafie was there to keep the game scoreless for the Dinos.
Calgary's best chance came late. After drawing a foul just outside the top of the box,
Owen Antoniuk's free kick dipped over the wall but Thawer was able to punch the ball over the net.
The two teams were whistled for a combined 28 fouls in this one, with a combined nine yellow cards being handed out in the hard-fought provincial battle.
"We knew they (the Pronghorns) were going to come out hard," Mifflin said. "We knew they were going to come in and be physical, so we had to match that intensity. I thought we had the better first half. They got the better of us for a bit in the second half, but in the end we all get a point, and in a 14-game season, anytime you can get a point is important."
Calgary finishes off its three-game homestand to start the season next Saturday when city rival Mount Royal comes to campus for a 6 p.m. contest. Meanwhile, the 'Horns head home for the start of their own three-game homestand, starting Friday with their home opener against MacEwan at 4:30 p.m.
