After a frigid double header Friday the University of Calgary Dinos resumed their weekend series with the visiting Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack on Saturday in another double header. As everyone in Calgary knows the weather can change overnight and Saturday proved that as the teams were welcomed with sunshine and double digit temperatures.
First game of the double header saw the Wolfpack take the game by a final score of 4 - 3. Dinos starter Riley Burns took the loss, but pitched a strong four innings, giving up one unearned run, as he surrendered only one hit over his four innings, and he struck out five. Reliever
Dylan Soch pitched three innings of shutout ball also striking out five Wolfpack and giving up only one hit. Despite the exceptional performance of Burns and Soch the Dinos found themselves trailing the Wolfpack 1 - 0 after 7 innings. Dinos surrendered three unearned runs in the top of the 8th inning and TRU had a 4 - 0 lead.
Dinos comeback in the bottom of the inning scoring two unearned runs aided by two TRU errors in the inning, but are unable to complete the final comeback in the ninth as the Dinos drop the first game 4 - 2.
Second game saw the Dinos come out quick. Starting pitcher
Jaydon Wielders struck out the side and the Dinos scored three in the bottom of the inning led by a two out double by Owen McCuaig, McCuaig would also score on an RBI single by
Ben Franz. Wielders would pick up his second win of the season as he pitched five and a third innings and left the game leading by a score of 4 - 3. Dinos would add some insurance in the sixth as they put one run on the board and two more runs in the seventh as relievers Keenan Loveridge and
Colin Baxter would shut out the Wolfpack the rest of the way. Dinos take game four by a final score of 7 - 3.
Bauer Sewell went three for four at the plate with an RBI as he sees his batting average go above .300 for the season.
Aiden Szautner also had a good day at the plate as he went two for three scoring two runs as he too saw his average go over .300
Ben Franz, McCuaig and
Steen Wallin (pinch hit double) led the Dinos with two RBI's apiece as the Dinos bats accounted for thirteen hits and seven RBI.
Next up for the Dinos is a midweek trip to Vancouver Island as they take on the VIU Mariners for a four game series.
