Dinos baseball team played their first games on home field as they hosted the Thompson Rivers University in a double-header Friday afternoon. Weather conditions were not ideal as it was cold, overcast and windy, but the two teams put on an energetic performance for the spectators in the stands at Foothills.
First game saw the Dinos fall behind early as starting pitcher
Ethan Webster struggled in the first inning and the Dinos fell behind early by a score of 3 -0. Webster settled down and kept the Wolfpack off the scoreboard for three more innings until he gave up one more run in the firth and the Wolfpack led 4 - 0 after five. Wolfpack starter held the Dinos off the scoreboard through six innnings.
Dinos relief pitcher
Alex Lanigan entered the game in the sixth inning, giving up one run in the inning and the Wolfpack led 5 - 0. However in the bottom of the seventh the Dinos came alive and scored four runs to leap back into the game. Dinos shortstop
Bauer Sewell had a triple in the inning as he had an RBI and scored a run.
Trailing by one run Lanigan shutdown the Wolfpack for the seventh and eigth innning and the Dinos tied the game at 5 - 5 in the bottom of the eighth with catcher
Eric Wirun cashing in a RBI with a single. Tied at 5 the teams went to the 9th inning where both sides heated up those in the crowds with an exciting conclusion to the game.
Wolfpack got to Lanigan in the top of the inning to score one run. Dinos up to bat and the comeback started. Dinos pinch hitter Brendan Tong came into the game with one out and promptly got a single.
Max Skinner went down on strikes and the Dinos were down to their final out needing one run to tie and two to get the victory over the top team in the CCBC.
Ben Hul worked a walk and Ryan Kennedy was hit by a pitch to load the bases bringing to the plate Dinos centre fielder
Aiden Szautner. Szautner was Dinos most consistent at the plate last year, but had struggled early in this season to find his hitting form being the victim of opposition great defense and unlucky situations this year. Facing two strikes Szautner hit a single to right and the Dinos walked off with the win by a score of 7 - 6. Dinos bench rushed the field as they celebrated their first victory of the weekend.
Lanigan picked up the win for his second victory of the season as he pitched 4 innings of relief.
Dinos continued the momentum in the second game of the day as they took a one run lead into the 6th inning. Starting pitcher
Brady Fehlauer gave up single runs in each of the first three innings but he battled to limit the damage and left the game giving up only three hits and three walks with two strikeouts and two earned runs after six innings of work. Dinos with the lead 4 - 3.
Wolpack scored two in the 8th and three in the 9th, as a late Dinos rally came up short as the Wolfpack took game #2 by a score of 8 - 6.
Dinos and Wolfpack continue with a double header on Saturday at Foothills with the promise of some warmer weather in the forecast.
