CALGARY – Three members of the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey program earned Canada West honours, the conference office announced Thursday.
Colson Gengenbach was named a first team all-star,
Noah King a second team all-star and
Jake Poole earned a spot on the all-rookie team as the Dinos once again were well represented following another strong season that saw them post a 21-5-2 mark to earn the second seed in this year's postseason bracket.
Gengenbach had a breakout season this year. After tallying 10 goals and 26 points combined in his first two seasons with Calgary, the third-year forward erupted for 20 goals this season – second most in the conference and fourth most in all of U SPORTS. Gengenbach also added another 15 assists – fourth most on the Dinos high-powered attack.
For King, this marks the third straight season earning postseason recognition, after being named a CW First Team All-Star a season ago following an all-rookie selection in 2022. The third-year defenseman once again proved to be one of the best on the back line in the conference, while also tying his career-high with 16 assists on the year.
It was a breakout first season for Poole. The 6-foot-2 forward from McAuley, Man. scored his first goal in just his second career game and never looked back, finding the back of the net 17 times on the year – by far the most by a rookie in the conference. Poole saved his best for when it mattered most, tallying a hat trick in a four-point performance in the penultimate game of the year when every point mattered for the Dinos in the standings. The rookie also added nine assists on the year for 26 points.
Following a bye week, Calgary officially starts its Canada West title defence this week with a best-of-three semifinal series with crosstown rival Mount Royal. All three games – starting Thursday – will take place inside Father David Bauer Arena on the Dinos campus and are set to start at 7 p.m.
