Dinos held off the scoresheet in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – Bryan Thomson made 20 saves in his first start of the season as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies beat the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team 2-0 on Saturday at Merlis Belsher Place.

The win completed a weekend sweep for Saskatchewan, which took Friday's season opener 4-3.

A tight first period produced just nine shots on goal between the two teams. Carl Tetachuk stopped all six he faced to keep the Dinos level at the intermission.

The Huskies broke through less than two minutes into the second period. Jaydon Dureau took a drop pass from Josh Pillar at the blue line, cut to the middle and beat Tetachuk for the first point of his Canada West career.

Calgary responded with its best stretch of the weekend. The Dinos outshot Saskatchewan 11-6 in the second period and spent long spells in the Huskies' end, but Thomson stopped everything to protect the one-goal lead.

Saskatchewan doubled its advantage on the power play early in the third period. Less than a minute and a half into the man advantage, Chase Bertholet found Huskies captain Liam Keeler on the doorstep for his first goal of the season. The assist gave Bertholet three points on the weekend.

Two more third-period penalties made a comeback harder for the Dinos. Calgary pulled Tetachuk for an extra attacker with just over a minute remaining but couldn't get past Thomson, who finished with the shutout.

Tetachuk made 23 saves for Calgary. Carter Massier led the Dinos with four shots on goal, while Gavin Schmidt and Remy Aquilon each added three.

The Dinos will return to action Friday, Oct. 16, when they host the Regina Cougars at 7 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena. Tickets are available at GoDinos.com/Tickets.

Saskatchewan will travel to face the Manitoba Bisons on Friday, Oct. 16.
